How slots work
Slot volatility: what the label on the tile predicts for your session
Volatility is the shape of the return, not its size. Two games can hand back the same share of stakes and feel nothing alike, and slot volatility is the name for that difference: one pays a little on every third spin, the other pays nothing for two hundred spins and then pays a thousand times the bet. The label on the tile tells you which of those you are sitting down to.

What the label measures and what it leaves out
Every slot returns a fixed share of stakes over its life; the return table on the high RTP page lists it game by game, and most of the catalogue sits between 96% and 97%. Volatility is how that share is distributed across the spins. A low volatility game spreads it thinly: small pays land often, the balance drifts down slowly, and the ceiling is modest. A high volatility game concentrates it: most spins return nothing, the ones that hit return a lot, and the ceiling is high. The average is identical; the path to it is not.
The label leaves two things out. It does not say how often the bonus triggers, which is a separate number the studio rarely prints; our record has it for three games only. And it does not say how the return splits between the base game and the feature, which is why two High titles can still differ: one pays most of its return through the base reels, another through a rare bonus round. The label is the first filter, not the last.
Note
Volatility and RTP are set separately in the maths model. Big Bass Bonanza at Med-High prints 96.71%; Sugar Rush Super Scatter at High prints 96.58%. The label moves the shape, not the percentage.
The three labels in our catalogue, with the games that carry them
| Label | Games in the catalogue | Max win printed | What a hundred spins look like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low-Med | Aviator | not printed | frequent small returns; you decide the size of each by cashing out early or late |
| Med-High | Sweet Bonanza, Big Bass Bonanza | 21,100x and 2,100x | regular tumble or line pays between features; the bonus is where the size comes from |
| High | The Dog House, Gates of Olympus, Wild West Gold and the rest | 5,000x to 50,000x | long stretches of losing spins; the session is decided by whether the feature lands |
Aviator is the only game below Med-High, and it is a crash game rather than a reel slot: the multiplier climbs from 1x and you choose when to cash out, so the volatility is partly yours to set. Sweet Bonanza and Big Bass Bonanza share the Med-High label with very different ceilings, 21,100x against 2,100x, which shows the label is about rhythm rather than the top prize. Everything else in the catalogue reads High, which is the house style of the studio that made most of it, and the ceilings run from 5,000x on Gates of Olympus and Book of Dead to 50,000x on the Super Scatter pair.
The hit and trigger frequencies we have on record
Three games in the catalogue have a measured frequency in our record, and they put the High label in numbers. Wild West Gold hits a paying combination on 33.33 of every hundred spins and triggers its free spins once every 177 spins on average. Gates of Olympus Super Scatter hits on 27.77 of every hundred and opens its bonus once every 437.62 spins, with the maximum win priced at one in 666,666,667. Sugar Rush Super Scatter hits on 32.26 of every hundred spins.
Read those against a session. A hundred spins on Wild West Gold produce a little over half a bonus on average, which means a large share of hundred-spin sessions have none. Four hundred spins on Gates of Olympus Super Scatter produce less than one. That is what High means in practice: the base game hits often enough to keep the balance moving, at 27 to 33 hits per hundred, but the pays are small, and the feature that carries the return is a rare event. The demo on each game page is where to feel it for free before a balance is involved.
Two screenshots on our game pages show the two ends of the rhythm on one title. Hot Fiesta pays 3,000 on a bet of 100 on a single line in one frame, thirty times the stake, and 297.93 in a round with a 5x piñata multiplier in another. The same game, the same label, and a tenfold difference between two winning spins: that spread is the volatility, and the label High is a warning that the spread is wide.
The one game that lets you pick the volatility
Zeus VS Hades opens with a choice screen the panel labels CHOOSE VOLATILITY, with HIGH OLYMPUS on one side and VERY HIGH HADES on the other. Olympus triggers the free spins more often with a lower average bonus win; Hades triggers them more rarely with a higher average. The base game is the same five-by-five grid with ten lines, expanding wilds with multipliers up to 100x, and a 15,000x ceiling on both sides. The choice does not touch the return; it moves the shape.
The Dog House Megaways offers a smaller version of the same decision inside the feature: Sticky Wilds is the shorter, compounding round, Raining Wilds the longer one with more frequent smaller hits. The Megaways page lays the two out. On every other title the label is fixed, and the only lever you hold is the stake.
How to size a stake to the label
Count the spins, not the money
Decide how many spins the session should last. On a High title the feature is a rare event, so a session that cannot reach a few hundred spins is a session that will usually end without one.
Divide the balance by that number
A balance of 40 units over 200 spins is a stake of 0.20, which is the minimum on The Dog House, Gates of Olympus and most of the catalogue. Big Bass Bonanza and Zeus VS Hades go down to 0.10, Book of Dead to 0.01.
Drop one step for High, keep it for Med-High
A Med-High game such as Sweet Bonanza returns something between features and can carry a slightly larger stake for the same spin count. A High game cannot.
Leave the buy button alone until the maths is clear
A bonus buy at 100x the bet on Wild West Gold is a hundred spins of budget spent on one feature. It shortens the wait; it does not change the odds inside the feature.
Check the wagering stake rule if a code is open
A no deposit code fixes the spin value and caps the stake while the requirement runs. The max bet rule matters more than any volatility choice while a bonus is active.
The stake ceiling that applies while a code is open is set out in max bet and game rules on no deposit codes.
Why a dry stretch is not a cold machine
A High label promises dry stretches, and players read them as the machine turning cold. It is not. Each spin is a fresh draw from a certified random number generator, the game keeps no memory of the last two hundred results, and the frequency numbers above are averages over millions of spins, not a quota the game owes you. A run of losing spins on Wild West Gold is what one bonus per 177 spins looks like from inside; it is the label doing what it says.
Hot and cold slots goes through the certification chain that makes the memory claim checkable. For choosing between two titles once the label is understood, how to choose a slot puts return, volatility and ceiling in order.
Apply it
One game per label, with the demo on the page
Aviator for Low-Med, Sweet Bonanza and Big Bass Bonanza for Med-High, The Dog House for High. Play a hundred spins of each on play credits and the labels stop being abstract.
Quick answers
Is high volatility better or worse
Neither; it is a shape. A High label such as The Dog House or Gates of Olympus means longer dry stretches and larger single hits, with a ceiling like 6,750x or 5,000x. A Low-Med label such as Aviator means frequent small returns and no printed ceiling. The better label is the one your balance and your session length can absorb.
Does volatility change the RTP
No. Big Bass Bonanza at Med-High prints 96.71% and Sugar Rush Super Scatter at High prints 96.58%, within a fraction of a point of each other. Volatility describes how that return is spread across spins: many small pays or few large ones. The two numbers are set separately in the maths model and the label does not move the percentage.
How many spins does a High volatility bonus take to trigger
It depends on the game, and only some records print it. Wild West Gold triggers its free spins once every 177 spins on average in our record, Gates of Olympus Super Scatter once every 437.62. Those are averages over millions of spins; a hundred-spin session can pass with no bonus at all on either.
Can I choose the volatility inside a slot
On one game in the catalogue, yes. Zeus VS Hades opens with a choice screen: Olympus triggers the bonus more often with a lower average win, Hades triggers it more rarely with a higher average. The panel labels them HIGH OLYMPUS and VERY HIGH HADES. Every other title has one fixed label.
